This Meetup repeats every week on Wednesday until September 29, 2010.

The Wednesday Night Sails are back!

This is the basic info for a WNS, I wanted to get the events up and will go back and edit them with more detail when I can.

Keeping with the idea behind the first WNS, I am paying the charter fee(s). There is a suggested $25 Donation when you RSVP. This donation will go into a fund that pays the expenses of the group. It is not a 'consideration for conveyance'. Please contact me if you want to attend without making a donation.

The WNS starts as soon as people can arrive, get the boat checked out and leave the dock. Not everyone can get to Berkeley by 5:30pm, so those that can, get there early and help us get the boat ready. We'll leave when the last person arrives. It's very important that you email me and we trade contact info, including cell numbers. That way if you are running late or run into parking problems we can guide you.

Return is around 8:00 pm, and there is chilli, chowder and beer in the club room afterwards. Once a month, there is also a BBQ. People share their stories until we are kicked out (usually around 10 pm).

Great first time meet and sail with all of you. John, I gotta let you know, I will have to call flying the kite on this sail a real TEASE.

    Hi Group,

There was a misunderstanding. I do not think think that "all volunteers should be paid." For me it taints the experience.

I will continue to share costs as anyone else for Gotwaw.

Beyond that, the other organizer's events that John and I discussed were concerts and the paid opportunity was an open offer not a solicitation.

I still want to help John'slift the load for Gotwaw as an unpaid volunteer.

I had a great time as always. Unfortunately we didn't fly the 'chute on our boat, but it was still exciting. My +1 had a great time too. She'll definitely be back for more.

It was a fabulous sail and overall good social gathering. I most enjoyed finally getting to really meet and talk to John Cabrall, who is such a patient teacher, superb sailor and considerate skipper -- I also enjoyed meeting Gabe who is a pleasure to have on board because he is so nice and knows just about all there is to know about crewing. And we also got to fly a spinnaker, which was a first for me. I coul not have asked for a better night other than more time doing the same.

THE BAY has a lot of moods. On this WNS, the skies were clear and the wind was up on the slot. With an established ebb, that means a short, steep chop and a steady 20 kt breeze. We had two boats. I skippered one J105 and Frank skippered the other. On the boat I was on, we had some 1st timers, so we reached off to the north to see if we could find 'the wind line' - that place where 20 kts transitions to 11 kts. We sought it out and found it about a quarter mile south of the Richmond Inner Harbor. That was enough relief to turn down wind and enjoy a short spinnaker experience. Just to show everyone on board what 'kite flying' on a J105 is like. We doused it just in time to set up on a reach through the waves back towards the Berkeley Marina.

Had a blast, per usual. Even though the spinnaker flying was brief, it was great introducing others to the joys of flying a spinnaker.
    •  Really nice weather. My favorite time out so far.
