Short notice for a short trip Saturday.

I will taking my 44' cutter out Sat AM in the bay for a about 4 hours.

Can take 2 guests. Prefer those who are interested in electronics and can steer a straight course.

Start the day at the dock with some check-outs and steering system bleeding.

We will go out to clear water and run some known headings using day marks and GPS and build a table of deviations for a card type compass, correcting as possible.

Next we will swing and calibrate two fluxgate electronic compasses.

After that if all is good, we will do an autopilot calibration; feedback, rate, rudder centering, etc. All pretty nerdy stuff really. A good chance to learn if you have never worked with steering systems or compasses before. Some basic docking and line handling instruction if you like.

No cost to attend.

Suggested items to bring:
non-marking shoes (no hiking boots please)
snacks and / or lunch
beverage of your choice
warm clothing
rain gear
handheld GPS if you have one

That's it! Hope to see you out there.

Thanks everybody for coming out. A big success, and so nice to have the autopilot up and running again!

Fog, haze and tidal currents complicated the choice of headings to perform the compass swing. It was very interesting to ride along as Bruce took us through the traditional process. We then performed 'flux gate' compass circle maneuvers to calibrate the autopilot compass and another digital compass. This was all followed by a maneuver to set up the autopilot and test it. I took some pictures and captured our track on my handheld GPS. I'll upload the images when I can find some time.
