Here is the information from previous updates:

Are you Racing in this year's 'Fiasco'?

Please RSVP YES if you are, and in your comment, state which boat (Boat Type, Name).

OTHERWISE:

If you want to go on the photo boat, RSVP Yes, add a comment that you'll be on the Photo Boat. You MUST email John your contact information. If John does not have that information, you can't go.

Photo boat details: We are meeting at Gate 8 of Marina Village in Alameda. Gate 8 is just to the left of the round building across from the Oakland Yacht Club. You must be there at 8 am to make it. We have a long distance to motor against a flood tide to arrive at the starting line off of Golden Gate Yacht Club by 9:30 am.

The Photo Boat Sail Plan is to photograph the fleet as it gathers for the start, then position ourselves at Blackaller Buoy near the South Pier of the Golden Gate Bridge to capture footage of the fleet rounding the buoy and (hopefully) set spinnakers. We are assuming that most of the fleet will choose the clockwise course direction to take full advantage of the last of the flood to sail from Blackaller to Red Rock before the ebb starts.

When the last Got Wind and Water entry clears Blackaller, we'll chase the front part of the fleet to Red Rock and capture the action there.

From there it will (hopefully) be a reach under sail to Yerba Buena Island to capture the typical chaos of boats trying to round the Southern most tip of that Island with the Bay Bridge as a backdrop.

Most likely we'll avoid the trip back to Golden Gate Yacht Club and head back down the Estuary to return to the slip before nightfall. That decision will be left to the owner and the photo boat crew is welcome to entice him to follow the fleet to the finish. He holds the authority to do as he pleases. :)

Please email John Cabrall with your contact info. We'll figure out who is bringing what food and snacks for the day.

If you are asking "What is the 3BF?", then here is a bit of the recipe:

Take 300+ boats
Put 1 (or 2, but no more than 2) people on each boat
Add a large dose of very unpredictable weather
Add extremely vigorous tidal currents
Release in a confined space (i.e. a short starting line off of Golden Gate YC)

Mix throughly by allowing them to decide for themselves what the race course is.

Bake for approx. 8 hours

Watch them run around San Francisco Bay until each has passed within spitting distance of not less than three bridges:

The Golden Gate Bridge
The Richmond - San Rafael Bridge
The Bay Bridge

Season with assorted rocks, islands and anchors.

Read various accounts on Latitude 38, Sailing Anarchy, NorCal Sailing, and look for video and photo albums on Got Wind and Water.

For more information, here is the Event Management site:

https://event-manager...

If you click on 'Entry List' in the menu bar of the above link, you'll see the 350+ entries (I'm not counting them)

Note: We use these Race Events to put in post race comments and photo albums. We want the sailing community to know that we are networking active sailors of all levels and positions, including those that race.

In hindsight, how do you cover 29 miles of water, looking for 11 boats out of 259 when those 259 boats are going in 5 different directions? - you take what you get.

GREAT Day! will upload photos (and some video) when I can find the time. There was every kind of condition today (except strong wind and rain). Learned you can do the Fiasco CW, CCW and Tied OFF (more on that later).

We are going to try to keep the number of people on the Photo Boat limited to 'about' 8. Mark, John, Rose (and her guest), Vincent, Vikas (and his guest) are confirmed, the others that want to come on board must contact John via cell phone by noon on Friday. I know most of the others on the list are racing.

Mark has graciously agreed to take his Tartan 4600 out as the GOTWAW Photoboat. It's Big, It's GREEN and it will cruise at 7 knots under power. If there is any wind, it will sail faster than that. I'm preparing a sail plan and will create an About page for the GOTWAW 3BF event.

I'll be racing Ay Caliente in this regatta with my good friend and ship mate of many year Adam Watts. We did it last year and just finished under the time limit....and look forward to placing a little better this year!

I'm not actually racing in this. I'll be organizing a spectator / photo boat to go out and take pictures and videos of our members who are in fact racing in the Fiasco. Stay tuned as we work out the details. You'll be able to join us on the spectator boat and cheer on our racing members.

What a fantastic day! Many, many thanks to Mark and Jack for taking us out on their boats to witness the spectacle of the 2010 Three Bridge Fiasco. On Mark's boat, the Tartan 4600 Gokuraku, we acted as a 'Got Wind and Water Photo Boat' and participated in Sailing Anarchy's 'On the Water' coverage of the event. It now appears that there were 3-4 different race strategies. Go CW (a bad idea), go CCW (the winner took this approach), or go through the middle - Start, head to Red Rock, then to TI, then to Blackaller, then finish. There were also 'button hook' variations on each of these strategies. It became very, very clear that one boat could not cover all of the different strategies. Gokuraku covered the start, the CCW TI group, then the Red Rock Rounding Fiasco. We caught some of our members on digital film, and missed others entirely. Next year, we are going to need more photo boats!

Terrific Experience! Many thanks to John for organizing, Mark for Hosting and Skippering, and all of the crew for great teamwork and conversation. It was incredible to witness 350+ sail boats, of all shapes and sizes, packed in like sardines before the race began. It was also fascinating to observe the different paths taken to the same race and the sailing styles to some tricky situation (ie strong currents @ Redrock). Being in the photo boat gave us the advantage to motor around and become front row traveling spectators with the veteran sailors sportscasting and explaining much of the the action. I continue to learned so much from everyone each time I have the opportunity to join a sail crew.

What a wonderful day. It was great to see so many boats come together under the backdrop of the GG Bridge. And it was fun cheering our friends on.
